Rover Mini Cooper RSP LE
Rebirth of a legend! The first official Cooper produced by Rover and its affiliated companies in over 19 years
This Rover Mini Cooper RSP LE is one of 600 special edition cars sold in Japan in late 1990. Released only a few months prior to the standard derivative, the celebratory launch of the special edition Mini Cooper featured many of the luxurious design cues from the Mini Thirty. Mated to the mini's standard gearbox, the MG Metro's 1275cc engine also increased the power output to 61ps. Finished in British racing green, this special edition car retains many of the original features, with some additional aesthetic upgrades. Purchased in May of 2017, this car has been fastidously maintained, using many of the high quality products sold on this website. The car drives beautifully with smooth gear changes and is stored locally with roof parking.
Shared with the Thirty, this stunning red leather steering wheel draws attention to the eye in an otherwise dark looking interior. This original leather steering wheel replaced the Momo steering wheel that was on the car at the time of purchase in 2017.
Though half leather interior with red piping was quite common on cars of this period, this special edition car was unique in featuring the Mini Cooper laurel tag. Both seats were re-installed in mid-2017, as they were missing at the time of purchase.
The most unique feature that distinguishes this SE model from all the others is the factory fitted sunroof by German manufacturer, Tudor Webasto. The glass sunroof tilts using the rotary handle, and can be opened to a maximum of 70mm.
This particular setup has twin HS2 carburretors with K&N filters for improved throttle response and fuel efficiency. Rebuilt, polished and tuned in June 2020. Internals of the engine, such as the crankshaft etc, are unknown and presumed to be standard.
Used mainly in performance engines, the special edition RSP LE has a factory fitted oil cooler. Fitted directly to the front panel [straight] stiffener, all hoses were replaced in 2018 for braided hoses and stainless steel connectors.
In homage to the original factory set-up, the exhuast system was replaced in 2017 with all new components. A Janspeed manifold connects to a custom made stainless steel side exit exhaust, emulating the sound of the ES601 exhaust system by Janspeed.
Measuring 12x4.5j ET+35, the 8-spoke minilites are exclusive to this [and the Thirty] special edition car, with the wheel nuts inline with the spoke. All four tyres, Yokohama Eco, are in good condition and date stamped April 2017.
With most of the maintenance proactive, this special edition car has been maintained using Japanese made high quality parts where applicable. Full details of all maintenance carried out since mid-2017 available on request.
Unique to special edition cars, the 10th digit of the VIN number is A, whereas the standard variation is B. The 17-digit VIN number [SAXXNNAMBAD011058] can be found in a number of locations, however the easiset to read is by the scuttle panel.
This particual car had blotchy paintwork at the time of purchase in 2017, and so had a full exterior respray prior to inspection. 100+ images of the car from all angles, including those at the time of respray, available on request.
As the face of Classic Minis Japan, this car has seen many aesthetic additions over the years, with some remaining on the car to this day. This unique RSP LE model by Spark (No.32) sits with pride on the parcel shelf and is included in the sale.
Having had the pleasure of owning & driving this car for in excess of five years, we have decided to sell this unique car due to the recent acquistion of our 1995 Monte Carlo SE. This car has been predominately trouble free during the time of ownership, and well documented on our facebook & Instagram pages.
